Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of amateur astronomy, with this one-day workshop from Science Horizons.

Designed for newcomers to the hobby, this informative experience will teach you the essential ideas and information you need to explore and understand the universe. You’ll learn the basics of astronomy, from the Moon and the planets in our Solar System, through to meteorites, black holes, and distant galaxies. You’ll even get the opportunity to examine rare meteorites.

Your day includes a practical introduction to beginner’s astronomy, including tips and tricks at observing the night sky, choosing the right equipment for your budget, and much more. There’ll be plenty of time to ask questions along the way – and with one of the UK’s most experienced astronomy educators as your guide, you’ll leave with plenty of knowledge to kickstart your new passion!

What happens on the day?

Your full-day course will be split into four sections, including presentations, discussion time and practical, hands-on learning.

The engaging practical sessions include examining real meteorites (including rare and unusual specimens), experiencing the use of spectroscopy, demonstrations and experience of setting up astronomical telescopes.

Full notes for participants to take away are included.

Validity

Your voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, while government restrictions apply in relation to Covid-19 we are offering free extensions on all experiences so you can take your experience when the time is right.

Please note you must have booked and taken your experience before the expiry date

Participant guidelines

  • Minimum age: 14
  • Under 18s must be accompanied by a full paying adult
  • The venue is on first floor, however a ramp and lift enable wheelchair accessibility. Toilets are also available on the same floor
  • The experience content, equipment used and restrictions may vary

Availability

This experience is available on selected dates throughout the year. 

We recommend you book at least 2 weeks in advance to ensure that dates are available. All bookings are subject to availability.

The day runs from 10.30 to 16.30, with the four main sections of the day separated by tea breaks and a short lunchbreak. Please allow 6 hours for the full experience.

What about insurance?

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

Please ensure you are familiar with the terms and conditions of the experience.
